The Triple Alliance was a military agreement signed in 1882 between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. The agreement was aimed at creating a counterbalance to the Franco-Russian alliance formed in the same year. The signatories pledged to support each other in case of an attack by either France or Russia, and to provide military assistance in case of an attack by any other power not mentioned in the agreement. In addition, they agreed to remain neutral if any of the signatories were attacked by a non-European power. The treaty was renewed in 1902, but Italy did not honor its commitment to attack France in World War I, leading to its withdrawal from the alliance and joining the Allies instead. The Triple Alliance is considered one of the main causes of the escalation of tensions in Europe leading up to World War I.
